Airnesco, Gun barrel cleaning system

Gun Barrel Cleaning System

The Airnesco system is pneumatic powered and suits both smooth and rifled barrels, mortars and launchers with a calibre from 12,7mm and up to 155mm.

The system is compact, easy to stow and virtually maintenance free. The system comprises of range of brushes and all necessary attachment to carry out weapon care duties across a wide range of weapon platforms. The equipment is stowed in either a single hard case or soft bag depending upon the applications requirements.

The Airnesco Gun Barrel Cleaning system has been developed to meet 3 key requirements such as removal of deposits and inhibiting oil, control of copper and other metallic deposits, and application of oil to a cleaned barrel surface.

System description

The systems are based on cylindrical, air powered tools – the Airnesco range of Ferrets. The Ferret can be fitted with a range of brushes and is powered by an 80-100PSI air supply which is connected to the tool via a wire braided hose. The air supply is controlled by a foot operated valve and the supply pressure is maintained by an adjustable free standing filter regulator unit.

The system is tailored to a specific barrel size and applications are fitted to the front of the Ferret. When the brush end is entered into a barrel and the air supply is turned on, the energy generated will drive the Ferret and brush up the barrel and will come to a halt when the brush enters the breech chamber or the muzzle end of the barrel (you may clean from either end). A tug on the hose will re-engage the brush and the Ferret travels back down the barrel.

As the Ferret has a swivel connection to the air supply hose both Ferret and brush are free to follow the rotation induced by the rifling thus scouring all parts of the barrel. The process can then be repeated until the required cleaning effect has been achieved.

Given the air supply, either from a mobile compressor to a vehicle or a fixed installation, of the required pressure and cfm, a typical cycle time for the brush to travel from muzzle to breech and return is about one minute for larger barrels, less for smaller.

The cleaning brushes are designed to incorporate two bristle diameters, the larger to penetrate the grooves of the rifling and the smaller to serve the lands. The systems can be used with equal ease from either the breech or muzzle end and are supplied in a durable container or soft luggage for ease of storage and transportation.

Cleaning sequence

Combining the Airnesco cleaning system with the Easy HD push camera gives you full visual control throughout the entire cleaning process. One of the main challenges when cleaning a gun barrel is removing copper fouling, and it can be difficult to determine whether all fouling has been properly eliminated. By using a visual inspection system, you can document barrel condition in real time and ensure a verifiable cleaning result.

Copper fouling reduces the internal diameter of the gun barrel and may cause it to fall outside acceptable tolerances. With the ROBINCA measurement system, you can accurately verify the barrel diameter and confirm that the barrel remains within specification.

The Cleaning Brush has stainless steel bristles and is used for general cleaning of lightly rusted or contaminated barrels.

The Broaching Rings are used when the cleaning brush is unable to remove hard deposits such as copper fouling. The Broaching Ring set includes two rings, which are mounted directly onto the cleaning brush to increase its cleaning capability.

The Distribution Brush is used to apply larger amounts of cleaning oil or other cleaning solutions. It consists of the front-end cleaning/driving section and the fluid reservoir at the Ferret end for smaller brushes. The brush separates in two for easy filling of the reservoir.

The expanding chamber brush is designed to clean the chamber of the barrel. The brush should be operated from the chamber end and will need to be compressed to be inserted into the chamber. Prior to inserting, the tension of the brush can be adjusted by using the provided tool which is inserted at the top of the brush.
